This past Wednesday I made the traditional Catalan pilgrimage to Montserrat. In the Catalan language, the word "Montserrat" literally means jagged, serrated mountain. Atop this striking mount lies a Benedictine monastery. I made the hour and a half journey via train and a special rack railway named "la cremallera" with my friend Stephanie. Unfortunately, our journey began in the rain. By the time we arrived at our destination the rain had ceased and we found ourselves in a mystical mountain fog. The English teacher I work with, Joan, told me that in the Catalan culture, Montserrat is a very sacred place where people go to offer prays and wishes. Following the tradition, and hoping for some luck, Stephanie and I each lit candles and make our wishes.
